Historical Record Types

Inside the archive

A historical record type, properly explained.

What it covers
Aerial views of buildings, roads, vegetation, open land and other visible features, depending on image date, scale and quality. Comparing available dates can help establish a sequence of visible change.
Coverage note
Dates, flight coverage, image quality and spatial alignment vary. Visible features require interpretation; an aerial photograph alone cannot establish whether contamination is present or absent.
Questions it helps frame
  • When did development or a change in visible land use first appear?
  • When did tanks, structures, roads or disturbed areas appear or disappear?
  • Does visible change suggest filling, excavation or activity requiring further investigation?
  • How has surrounding land use changed?
Use in context
Historical land-use assessment, preliminary site investigations, contaminated-land due diligence and property risk review.
