Understanding the Map

Learn how to use Enviro-D's interactive mapping interface to explore properties and visualise environmental risk data.

The interactive map is the heart of Enviro-D. It combines powerful GIS technology with authoritative government data to give you instant environmental insights.

Map Interface Overview

The search bar at the top of the map accepts:

  • Full street addresses (e.g., "123 Collins Street, Melbourne VIC")
  • Partial addresses with suburb/postcode
  • Lot and plan references where available

As you type, autocomplete suggestions appear based on the Australian address database. Select a suggestion to zoom directly to that property.

Base Maps

Toggle between different base map styles using the layer control:

Base MapBest For
StreetsGeneral navigation, address context
SatelliteVisual site inspection, vegetation assessment
TopographicUnderstanding terrain, drainage patterns
Light/DarkReduced visual noise when focusing on overlays

Property Boundaries

When you select an address, Enviro-D displays:

  • Property boundary - The cadastral lot boundary from official data
  • Property centroid - The central point marker
  • Neighbouring properties - Visible when zoomed in

Environmental Layers

Toggling Layers

Use the layer panel to enable or disable environmental overlays:

  • Planning Zones - Land use zoning classifications
  • Flood Overlays - Land subject to inundation, floodway, flood fringe
  • Bushfire Overlays - Bushfire Prone Areas, Bushfire Management Overlay
  • Heritage Places - Victorian Heritage Register locations
  • EPA Sites - Contaminated land priority sites

Layer Legend

Each layer has an associated legend showing:

  • Colour coding for different classifications
  • Risk severity indicators
  • Data source attribution

Map Controls

  • Zoom - Use scroll wheel or +/- buttons
  • Pan - Click and drag the map
  • Reset view - Return to selected property

Measurement Tools

For Professional and Full Access reports, additional tools include:

  • Distance measurement between points
  • Area calculation for selected regions
  • Buffer zone visualisation

Data Sources

All environmental data comes from authoritative government sources:

  • Victorian Planning Provisions - Department of Transport and Planning
  • EPA Victoria - Priority Sites Register
  • Heritage Victoria - Victorian Heritage Register
  • CFA Victoria - Bushfire Prone Area mapping

Data is updated regularly to ensure accuracy.

Tips for Effective Analysis

  1. Start with satellite view to understand the physical site
  2. Enable one layer at a time to clearly see each risk factor
  3. Zoom out to understand the surrounding area context
  4. Check neighbouring properties for nearby contamination sites
  5. Use the topographic view to understand drainage and flood risk patterns
